What is Powder Coating?
What is powder coating? And why do people use it? Powder coating is one of the most advanced coating processes available; it is usually used to create a hard finish that is more durable than conventional paint. Powder coating provides the perfect blend of visual appearance, durability and longevity, and it is the ideal surface finish for a wide range of materials and products. Different coatings have varying lifespans, and how long a coating lasts for does depend on how consistently the item is used and the environments it is exposed to. However, a black powder coating (for example) can last up to 20 years.
Powder coat finish process
The powder coat finish process involves electrostatically charged resin and pigments that are sprayed onto an electrically grounded surface. Once the spraying has taken place the components are cured in an oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality finish with exterior durability, particularly resistance to ultraviolet light (sunlight).
Colour selection is almost unlimited with varying gloss levels available. Textured finishes are also available along with Heat Resistant finishes. The powder coat finish process doesn’t release any VOC’s and has virtually no environmental impact.
With thousands of components coated across a wide range of materials, our powder coaters ensure the best finish.

Our Powder coating Services are based on five core principles:
- High quality.Providing quality powder coating to customer’s components in accordance with specifications.
- The service. Our delivery and turnaround times are consistent, so when we quote a three-day turnaround time, we actually stick to it.
- The importance of good housekeeping. The 80,000-square-foot Powder Coating facility at our facility is probably the cleanest in the industry. In order to achieve quality powder coating, the premises must be spotlessly clean and tidy.
- A flexible approach. We can coat small batches or large runs of work quickly and efficiently.
- Providing the same level of service and care to every part we powder coat, all the time, every time.
Benefits of Powder Coatings
With powder coating, you can achieve more specialized finishes, reduce environmental impact, speed up turnaround time, and lower the cost of material over liquid coating.
Additionally, powder coatings are more long-lasting and durable than liquid paints, and they come in a variety of finishes. In addition to exhibiting greater resistance to impact, moisture, chemicals, and wear, they also offer greater protection from scratches, abrasion, corrosion, fading, and general wear. These characteristics make them well-suited for high-use and high-traffic applications.
Additionally, powder coatings do not emit solvents or carbon dioxide, require no disposal of hazardous waste, and require no primer on the surface. Powder coating is recognised as an environmentally-friendly alternative to liquid coatings because these exclusions reduce the amount of toxic and carcinogenic substances released into the environment.
Due to its generally faster turnaround time and higher coating material utilization, the process can have much lower long-term costs compared to liquid coating. Having powder coating curing allow parts to be assembled, packaged, and shipped immediately after they are cool, manufacturers and finishing service providers are able to produce faster turnarounds and require less storage space since parts spend less time in inventory. By collecting and recycling overspray material, the amount of waste products requiring disposal is reduced, the coating materials are utilized more efficiently, and the cost of materials is lower over time.
What can powder coating be used for?
Powder coating can be used on a variety of materials, but it is most commonly used on metal. Powder-coated aluminium is a very popular choice because this protects the aluminium from moisture and elements, which prevents any chalky materials from appearing on the aluminium and therefore maintains the look and integrity of the metal. When used on metal, powder coating helps to prevent rusting and corrosion over time as it creates a barrier between the metal and both moisture and oxygen, which together cause the corrosion of metals. Powder coating wheels is a popular choice because the powder-coated surface bonds well with the metal surface on the rims. Ally wheel powder coating is more durable and more resistant to flaking and chipping than paint, and it protects your alloy wheels more. Although powder coating is mainly used for metal items, a powder coat finish can be applied to any material, including wood, glass, plastic and MDF, among others.
Powder coating Birmingham
There is a range of companies providing powder coating services across the UK; however, due to the nature of the service, you should ideally look for a company that is local to you. Make a list of all the powder coating companies in your area and do some research to not only understand the varying prices but also the level of service the company provides. When it comes to choosing a powder coating service, consider your needs. If the work is small and easy, you could use any number of services, but if the job is larger, more specialist and/or requires more work, you ideally need to use a company that has more than one production line and, therefore can offer you a quicker turnaround, even on a large job.
